January, 2010

GYC (Generation of Youth for Christ) was the best way to begin the new year! And best of all, it was in Louisville, meaning only a 3hr drive. We were blessed with some beautiful views out our hotel window.

This year's theme, "Unashamed", was a wonderful encouragement and challenge to all of us. We also enjoyed connecting and re-connecting with friends, and getting our spiritual batteries recharged for the coming year.

Beautiful sunset out our hotel window.

Some of the many skywalks we walked through several times a day. We estimated that we walked about 2+ miles every day during GYC!

January began with a heavy cold spell, lasting longer than usual for Kentucky. We excitedly hiked the icicle-covered Eagle Falls trail and saw the spectacular wonders of Cumberland Falls and Eagle Falls in ice!

Some of the enormous icicles we passed along the trail.

Careful, Mom! Watch your step!

It was like walking through a cave--only the stalactites and stalagtites were formed out of ice! Here's looking up at some hanging above the trail.

The view of Cumberland Falls from the vantage point was beautiful! Not only can you see hundreds of gigantic icicles hanging off the falls, but also a large quantity of broken ice chunks floating below the falls (making it look like snow).

A closer view of the icicles at Cumberland Falls.

Daniel and Andrew looking for more icicles along the trail.

Look at these! They are solid from top to bottom!

Closer view of the other side. The ripples in the ice were so neat!

Daniel and Robert taking one last look before heading on down the trail.

Andrew enjoying a small chunk off a broken icicle he found.

The beauty was breathtaking!

These icicles were completely crystal-clear, despite their dirty ceiling.

Eagle Falls--encrusted in ice!

Daniel and Robert walking on the ice to get a closer look. The "boiling" appearance under the falls is solid ice!

It was even more fun exploring behind the falls!
