Our Home Sweet Home
You are looking at Cumberland Falls -- sometimes referred to as the "Niagra of the South." This state park, with its hiking trails and picnic areas, is only 4 miles from our front door! This photo was taken right at the beginning of spring flooding.
Here's a closer view of Cumberland Falls--this time at full flooding! The roar of the falls is so loud we can hear it from our house!
Here's the same closer view of Cumberland Falls-- this time during the summer! The sunshine and green bushes just make it sparkle!
One of our favorite hikes is right along the river and Cumberland Falls. It's the Eagle Falls hiking trail. It has enough stairs to keep our climbing muscles in shape, but a short enough hike that it doesn't take all afternoon. And the fact it's less than 4 miles from our doorstep--we couldn't ask for better! This is one of our favorite views of Cumberland Falls, about halfway down the trail. Here the falls is at flood stage.
Here is the same view along Eagle Falls Trail, a little later in the spring when the falls was starting to get lower (it gets a fair amount narrower towards the end of the summer). The sunshine makes it sparkle!
And here is the destination--Eagle Falls! The cool mist coming off the falls is natural air conditioning on hot summer days and the rocks around it are so much fun to climb and explore!
A really pretty springtime and early summer hike is Dog Slaughter Falls. The trail gently winds through the woods following a small stream, and ends up with this breath-taking view. We went there when the rhododendrum bushes were in full bloom, and arrived at the falls just as the sun disappeared over the ridge, creating a perfectly stunning photo!
Here's a picture that was taken from one of the overlooks in the Big South Fork National Park, only about 25 minutes from our home. Aren't the ridges beautiful? We are located in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest, and nearly surrounded with gorgeous state parks and trails--perfect for hiking, camping, canoeing, backpacking, climbing, caving, and whatever other outdoor adventures you'd like to have! We've been able to do most of those this summer! The pictures you've seen are just a fraction of all the neat places we have here! If you want to see some more, just look our following months of photos--a lot of them were taken on hikes or canoe trips around here!
Last, but not least, is the little Stearns Seventh-day Adventist Church, with a small group of members, located on the outskirts of Whitley City. We hope to be a blessing, not only to this church, but other churches and communities in our area. Through friendship, cooking classes, Sabbath School, and nature seminars, we have been able to reach people here in our community and abroad Please pray with us, that we may be a light shining in the dark place!
