Canoeing, Camping at Laurel Lake, Aunt Rosie's wedding.
Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Show AllWe took more pictures this time--this is some of us working hard in the kitchen, fixing all the food for the reception! (There seems to be a trend here....)
Second week of September found us on a new adventure--a four day canoe camping trip on Laurel Lake (about an hour from our home). Our friends Ernie and Amber came with us and we had a blast!
Ernie and Amber trying to learn how to steer the canoe, and keep their dog, Nellie, from tipping them over!
We arrived at our campsite, unloaded our canoes, and heard a low rumble of thunder in the distance! We quickly put up our tents, threw our sleeping bags inside, closed all the containers, and dove in just as it began to pour buckets! (Looking from the tent window)
We watched the rain from this little window for over an hour. Then we realized that we were floating in a puddle of water! Our tent pad had no drainage! Daniel went out and dug a trench around our tent, and then we were fine. At least we stayed dry!
The next morning, it was sprinkling off and on, but not enough to keep us from exploring! We got into our canoes and set off to see what we could find. (Note the rain in the distance.)
Nellie couldn't take it any longer, she jumped into the water and started swimming to Amber! She was rescued and put back into the canoe, much to her relief!
Poor Nellie--everyone in the water but her and she was floating away! We dumped the canoe twice on her, but she had lots of fun!
Daniel trying to see how far back on the tip of the canoe he can balance without landing in the water.
Kristina watching the fun from shore. She swam until she got cold, then dried off and changed, and watched the rest from shore--that's why there are photos!
Lighting a campfire--everything was wet from the rain, and Daniel got tired after blowing on it for 20 minutes!
But with Ernie's battery-powered air mattress blower, the fire was soon roaring to life! Who would have thought?
Sabbath Breakfast of couscous and home-dried veggies. Yummy! For Sabbath we paddled into the wildlife refuge so we could have peace and quiet. We talked, read, and shared together until sundown, then came back to camp for vespers.
Sunday morning, we got up early enough to watch the sunrise and see the mist rising off the lake before breakfast!
Then we ate a delicious breakfast of baked potatoes and hotdogs, took down camp, and loaded up the canoes.
Esther came to visit us for a week, so she and I decided to can some more salsa. We did 28 pints and 3 quarts! Yummy!
Esther was preparing to leave as a missionary to Nepal shortly, so we had fun helping her shop for things and get ready for her trip in a few weeks.
Daniel cutting a little plot for our salad garden next spring. He dug it up and we put a half a bale of alfalfa on it. Hopefully that will help the top soil to rejuvinate!
Esther and Kristina took a little field trip to where they make sorghum. The sorghum stalks are juiced and then boiled on here.
It comes out as sorghum syrup on the end where the guy is sitting. We can get it cheaper than honey. Yummy!
Esther and Kristina also went to an orchard and picked 5 bushels of apples. The next day they made 58 qts of applesauce! (There's two qts. apple juice from the boiled apples.) Later, Daniel and Kristina made 22 qts of chunky applesauce, making our total 80 qts!
Kristina watching David take over her computer! There was nothing she could do about it... lol We had a blast!
Kristina spent a fun day down at the Knoxville Zoo with her friend Sarah and kids. Here are some of the birds they saw.
Rinos. Kristina had so much fun visiting with Sarah too! It was a great way to end the month of September!
