Snow and ice, Eagle Falls in Ice, Cumberland Falls in Ice.
Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Show AllGYC (Generation of Youth for Christ) was the best way to begin the new year! And best of all, it was in Louisville, meaning only a 3hr drive. We were blessed with some beautiful views out our hotel window.
Some of the many skywalks we walked through several times a day. We estimated that we walked about 2+ miles every day during GYC!
January began with a heavy cold spell, lasting longer than usual for Kentucky. We excitedly hiked the icicle-covered Eagle Falls trail and saw the spectacular wonders of Cumberland Falls and Eagle Falls in ice!
It was like walking through a cave--only the stalactites and stalagtites were formed out of ice! Here's looking up at some hanging above the trail.
The view of Cumberland Falls from the vantage point was beautiful! Not only can you see hundreds of gigantic icicles hanging off the falls, but also a large quantity of broken ice chunks floating below the falls (making it look like snow).
Daniel and Robert walking on the ice to get a closer look. The "boiling" appearance under the falls is solid ice!
Looking directly at the pile of ice under the falls--from behind the falls. (Unfortunately the camera glitched and put a couple streaks in the photo.)
Large chunks of ice floating down the Cumberland River below Cumberland Falls. We hiked back in the thickening darkness, but the snow made it pretty easy to see the trail.
Parking area for Cumberland Falls--across the river from the trail. (We were just about to the trailhead.) The lights made neat reflections on the swift-moving river!
A couple weeks later, Marijke and Joel came to visit us, so we went back to Eagle Falls to see how the snow melt and rain affected it.
Farther view of the falls--the roar was like thunder across the ridges! (We can here it well from our house!)
Neat photo of Daniel on the rock next to the falls. The noise was deafening and our ears were ringing for a while!
The end of January, after a couple weeks of nice spring weather, it decided to turn winter again--six inches of fluffy powder snow!
How do you make a snow angel with skis on? Step one: Find a nice down-hill slope, making for an easy fall (don't worry about getting back up)...
Step six: Growl, spit, yell, and turn head to no avail while seeing your cats face headed straight for your nose!
Step eight: Try to get up to a sitting position with an extra 10 lbs of determined claws hanging on for dear life.
Step nine: Helplessly try to get up from the downhill position with skis and poles going their own way. Try to find an uphill point to make a snow angel next time.
